Prayers of Intercession

Prayers of Intercession #

In the Lutheran Christian tradition, of which I am part and parcel, the Prayers of Intercession – which you might also know as Prayers of the People or of the Church – are prayers one person offers on behalf of the many. Lutherans practice a priesthood of all believers. I grew up in a fundamentalist Lutheran denomination. The understanding then would have been “all baptized and possibly communed members of the Church” but at the University Lutheran Chapel we take it to mean that everyone who is interested is welcome to participate in the work of the Church, including in the rituals of worship. I volunteer to write and recite the Prayers once a month, generally on the first Sunday service of the month.
